This is a brandy-based liqueur. Brandies are made from distilled wine, which gives off flavours of dark fruits. Since this drink has many oak spice flavours and scents, it is likely that the wine which was distilled was also aged in oak barrels. To become a liqueur, the brandy had to have added sugars, water, and flavourings from natural botanicals. The recipe for this drink has remained the same for over 100 years.
